Message from the Principal:  If a student deferred against our advice to the 2016 test date and was hospitalized or in an accident, etc. and missed writing the test, the reason does not matter. They cannot graduate without writing the test. If they fail they can take the OLC4O course in July. However they cannot take the course without first writing and failing the OSSLT.

Work on these sheets:

  • Introduction to organic chemistry- use internet until you get your textbook

-Working with Molecular Shape and Polarity use internet until you get textbook

- Work on “Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes, and Cyclic Hydrocarbons

ACTIVITY #1

Introduction Internet Activity- With the 2 people beside you decide an answer on the following:

1. How do you decide what makes a good website?

2. What does IUPAC stand for?

3. Define what a molecular compound is?

4. Draw a structural formula of H20, and ball and stick model of H20 ?

5. What is a tetrahedral shape

FINAL OSSLT WORKSHOPS.jpg

Monday March 30, 2015

Must complete the following for Thursday:

Organic Chemicals: Risks and responses

  1. Find and organize examples, sources, manufacturers, uses, and associated hazards or risks of some organic compounds.

·         Would a table format help you organize the information?

  1. For one of the compounds above,

a) find an online MSDS

b) assess the danger to human health or to the environment associated with the compound

c) draw a WHMIS label for the compound based on the MSDS

·         labels provide workers with information related to the hazards of a compound and to its safe handling

d) given the risks associated with the compound you chose,

a. propose a course of action to reduce the reliance on or use of that compound, OR

b. propose a course of action for its safe but continued use, OR

c. decide whether you would support a ban, reduction in use, or no change in the availability or production of the compound.

What is a WHIMIS label?
